In many ways, mental health has become a more important topic. As awareness of the importance of mental health issues continues to increase, we can hopefully see a positive shift in attitudes towards those who suffer with these disorders like nolichucky mental health. However, the drawbacks to this progress will most likely be the lack of funding and acknowledgment for people suffering from these illnesses.
Even when people are aware that there is a problem, they often don’t know how they can help. Nevertheless, there are many ways in which you can support those who are struggling themselves as well as help make mental health a more visible topic so that it becomes easier to find answers and seek advice on your own.
1. Get educated.
First of all, if you’re not sure about where to start, there are many websites and articles that you can read to learn more about mental health. Furthermore, there is a section on this website for Help for Yourself for those who are ready to take their first step into direct support.
2. Show some love.
There’s no way to say it any better than “love wins”. It may be difficult to tell the people that you care about that you’re there for them, but the truth is that they are constantly being judged and labeled based on their mental health status. Although you cannot cure or fix anyone, you can at least show them some love by supporting them in other ways. You can write on their Facebook wall with words of encouragement, send them a “get well soon” card or just send them a text to let them know that they’re not alone.
3. Be mindful.
Although there is nothing wrong with being proud of what you have accomplished through your own efforts and hard work, it can be helpful to examine the positive ways in which your mental health affects others on a deeper level. When people are depressed, self-destructive or angry, they can often become irritable creating problems for themselves and those around them. On the other hand, if someone receives a compliment and looks inward to see how they came to be worthy of this high regard, they can find ways to improve themselves and carry out their dreams.
4. Don’t get down on yourself.
There are so many ideas of what it means to be a “good person”, but too often we forget about what it takes simply to remain balanced. If you feel worried, sad or angry by something that has happened in your life, don’t be afraid to look for ways in which you can express these feelings in healthy ways that will ultimately bring you peace of mind.
5. Show some empathy.
Finally, remember that you are also a person who is affected by the mental health of others. Even if someone else’s behavior seems destructive, hurtful or dangerous to you, remember that you have no idea what that person has been through in their life, especially when it comes to mental health issues. Remembering the power of empathy can help to keep your mind and heart open even when everything seems bleak and hopeless.
6. Be a team player.
Your support to the mental health of others means more than just your personal influence. There are many ways that you can be a part of something bigger such as supporting the everyday effort of raising money for mental health research, writing to your local government to encourage awareness and support or simply spreading the word through social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.
7. Speak up!
In some cases, no matter how hard you try to keep a positive attitude about someone’s mental health, it may be time for them to seek help or at least speak with someone who can give them professional advice on their situation. Just remember that it is your duty as a friend or family member to support them in their time of need.
8. Always be yourself.
No matter how you feel or what you’re going through, the ability to be true to yourself shows that you are a healthy person who is capable of feeling and expressing both happiness and sadness. No one ever accepted their true self because they were forced to wear a mask at all times. If we start acting instead of feeling, then we will only create more problems for ourselves in the end. We may feel different but we are all the same inside and that is what makes us strong individuals who can withstand anything life throws at us.
9. Be kind.
Sometimes, people do not know what they have done to deserve the kindness that they have received from others. It is important not to resent or blame them for this, but rather take notice of the ways in which they have helped you and show them that you appreciate it!
10. Don’t feel ashamed to ask for help.
There are several ways in which you can reach out to others in need of assistance or advice: call their friends, write a letter (if someone is especially depressed or suicidal) and even send an email or a text message (if someone does not want to talk about it in person).
As we continue to move forward with our mental health awareness campaign we at The Self Improvement Blog hope that people will take more time to look inward and question how our own actions affect not only others but ourselves as well.
